Jim's Tasting Notes:

The mate flavor is very pleasant and the bitterness that sometimes is present with Mate is smoothed out by the wonderful lemon flavor and the high quality green tea.  This tea is quite pleasant and makes an excellent first cup of the day.

Green Tea

Among green tea’s many benefits, most notable are:

  • High in anti-oxidants- green tea is loaded with polyphenols.  These anti-oxidants can reduce inflammation by protecting the body against free radicals and cell damage.
  • May help lower the risk of heart disease – The polyphenols found in green tea can help to relax blood vessels and prevent bad (LDL) cholesterol from becoming oxidized.
  • Good for oral health- Green tea is a natural source of fluoride, catechins and tannins. Several studies have shown that these compounds can help fight bacteria that cause plaque on teeth.
  • Green tea has powerful antioxidants that may protect against cancer. Multiple studies show that green tea drinkers have a lower risk of various types of cancer.
  • Bone health- Catechins in green tea have been shown to prevent bone loss by suppressing cells that break down bone.
  • Green tea contains the amino acid L-theanine, which can work synergistically with caffeine to improve brain function.
  • EGCG, a compound found in green tea, has been linked with a lower risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s diseases.
  • Green tea is widely thought to help with weight loss, though studies are inconclusive.

Mate

Mate has many fascinating properties.  Among its many benefits:


  • Mate is loaded with antioxidants, including
    • Xanthines - Stimulant compounds that include caffeine and theobromine.
    • Caffeoyl derivatives: The main health-promoting antioxidants in mate.
    • Saponins: Have anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-lowering properties as well as antiparasitic effects.
    • Polyphenols: This is a large group of antioxidants, linked to a reduced risk of many diseases.
  • Contains the minerals minerals aluminum, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, potassium, and zinc.
  • Known to boost alertness and mental focus without the caffeine jitters of coffee.
  • Xanthene and minerals in Mate have been studied for its role in boosting metabolism.  One study showed that individuals given one 1-gram capsule of ground yerba mate leaves right before exercise burned 24% more fat during exercise.
  • Is being studied for its cholesterol lowering properties.
  • Is being studied for its ability to control insulin signaling and blood sugar levels.

Nettle Leaf

  • May help flush harmful bacteria from the urinary tract
  • Has traditionally been used to treat muscle and arthritis pain
  • One 2013 study on nettle leaf extract showed lowered A1C and blood glucose levels in test patients who took it along with their regular diabetes treatment.
  • Loaded with powerful antioxidants, most notably polyphenols.
